infoYu, South & Associates just learned from reliable sources that a computer glitch at the U.S. Department of State (DOS) has caused delays in passport and visa processing at its embassies around the world since yesterday.

The database related problems have resulted in an "extensive backlog" of applications, and around 50,000 applicants were hit in one country alone, said one DOS official. Specifically, the database is a record system used to adjudicate, approve, record and print visas and other documents at DOS, to ensure national security checks on all applicants.

DOS spokeswoman Marie Harf said the problem is worldwide, and not specific to any country, documents or visa category. She said the issuance of U.S. passports, visas and reports of Americans born abroad would all be stalled. DOS is working to correct the problem but has given no timeline of a fix.
